Section on Tobacco, Alcohol & Drug Use

In NYU Langone’s Section on Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug Use, part of the Department of Population Health’s Division of Comparative Effectiveness and Decision Science, we develop and evaluate innovative strategies to prevent and treat substance use disorders and related harms. Our research addresses drug use epidemiology, substance use screening and treatment in medical and criminal justice settings, technology-based smoking and opioid interventions, e-cigarettes, and strategies to prevent and treat substance use problems at the community and population level. We are leaders in integrating substance use interventions into mainstream medical care, which we study through clinical trials, pragmatic trials, and implementation science.

Our faculty play key roles in national networks including the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network (CTN), the Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN), and the National Drug Early Warning System (NDEWS). We also lead the NYU Abu Dhabi Public Health Research Center.

We offer educational opportunities including a fellowship in addiction medicine for medical graduates, a training program in substance use disorder research for NYU and NYU Grossman School of Medicine students in health disciplines, and an internship in health services research and smoking cessation for college students and recent college graduates. We also collaborate with the Tobacco Research Lab at NYU School of Global Public Health, which provides opportunities for master’s students to participate in research on tobacco and nicotine products.
